改めて自己紹介をお願いします。

Hello, my name is Ben Kweller! I write and sing songs. I live in Austin, TX.

こんにちは。ベン・クウェラーと言います。曲と詩を書いていて、テキサスのオースティンに住んでます。

Did you know about Kyoto Music Expo? If you did, please tell us what you thought about it.

京都音楽博覧会に対してどのような印象をお持ちでしたか。

good friend of mine, Hayato Kasuga, told me about the Expo and about the band Quruli. It sounds like an amazing time for all.

友人がExpoとバンドのくるりについて教えてくれました。素晴らしいフェスだとわくわくしてます。

Please tell us what you are looking forward to about performing at Kyoto Music Expo.

出演されるにあたって、楽しみなことをお教えください。

I think Kyoto is my favorite city in Japan so I am very excited to visit again. Last time I was there I stayed in a traditional ryoken and walked the philosophers path. I look forward to this trip very much. I think performing in the center of town will be quite a thrill. Im really honored that Quruli chose me to be a part of this lineup. I cant wait to meet and share a sake with them!

京都は日本の中でも僕の大好きな町のひとつなので、また訪れる事が出来て興奮してます。前回訪れた時は伝統的な旅館に泊まって、哲学の道を歩きました。今回の旅をとても楽しみにしています。あの町の真ん中で演奏する事自体、ドキドキしますよね。くるりが今回のラインナップのひとつに選んでくれたことを光栄に思ってます。彼らにあってお礼をいいつつ、お酒を飲める事を楽しみにしてます。

Please name an artist from this year’s lineup that you are most interested.

今回の出演者の中で一番気になるアーティストを教えてください。

ME! Ha!! Because I am very interested to see how the people of Kyoto react to my sound. It is a very American, rootsy sound that I am bringing. But at the end of the day I am a pop artist… my my music whether it is Punk, Country, Rock n Roll or Folk – its always pop music, meaning there is melody and memorable words. Of course I cant wait to see Quruli and the other bands I have never heard of so it will be great for me to hear new music.

オレ。なんちゃって。京都のオーディエンスが僕のサウンドにどう反応してくれるのか、凄く興味が有ります。僕が演奏するのはとてもアメリカンで、伝統的な音だからです。でも結局は僕はPOPアーティストなので、パンク、カントリー、ロックンロール、フォークとなにをやってみても、いつだってポップ・ミュージックなんです。そこにあるのは、メロディと印象的な言葉達という意味で。もちろん、くるりや他の僕が聴いた事の無いバンド達を観るのはすごく楽しみです。

Kyoto Music Expo is held in Quruli’s hometown, Kyoto. Do you think there is a link between your music and a place where you grew up? If so, please tell us why.

京都音博はくるりの地元で行なわれるイベントですが、生まれ育った場所と自分が演奏している音楽には接点があると思いますか。また、あるとすればそれは何故でしょうか。

OH YES! Very much. “We are where we come from.” I grew up listening to the Beatles because my father loved them. then Nirvana came out and was my favorite band. But because I grew up in Texas, country music was always on the radio and in stores and at the dentists office, ya know? Because of this subliminal attachment to country music it has shaped my sound in lots of ways. Most people from my home town (greenville, TX) live on farms and don't have much money. Most people never leave the town. My music has given me a great opportunity to experience the world and things outside of that town. But growing up in Greenville, has made me who I am and given me a connection with people from all walks of life. Everyone is my friend and I can relate easily with most people.

もちろんです。とっても。僕達はやってきた土地そのものでもあると思います。僕は父が好きだったビートルズを聴いて育ちました。そこにニルバーナが現れて、僕の大好きなバンドになった。でもテキサスに育ったので、カントリー・ミュージックがいつもラジオから流れていました。お店に行っても、歯医者に行っても。わかるでしょう？なので、このサブリミナル効果によって、僕の音楽にとってカントリーという音楽は大きな位置を占めることになったのです。僕のホームタウン（テキサス州グリーンヴィル）の多くの人々は農場に住んでいて、お金持ちってわけじゃない。多くの人は町から出ない。幸運にも僕は自分の音楽によって、町を出て、いろんな素晴らしい経験をする機会をえました。でも、グリーンヴィルに育ったことによって僕という人間が出来上がったのだし、これまでに出会った色々な人達との関係も結局そこから来ています。僕のすべての友人たちと僕は、人々ととてもリラックスした関係を築く事が出来るんですよ。

What kind of sound comes to your mind when you think of Kyoto?

「京都」と聞いて思い浮かべる音は何でしょうか。

Hhhmmm…. I guess very traditional Japanese music. Something with a Koto & Shakuhachi… flutes, strings. Very soothing music.

うーん。多分、とても伝統的な日本の音楽かな。琴と尺八みたいな感じ。フルートと弦楽器で、とても滑らかな音楽というか。

For people from Kyoto, sounds of Gion Festival’s flute and bells are reminders of home. What sounds or music remind you of home?

京都の人にとって、祇園祭の笛や鐘があるように、ご自身にとって故郷を思い出させる音、音楽はどのようなものですか。

Something very different. For me old jonny cash and hank Williams remind me of home. Also American classic rock like Boston, Tom Petty, Steve Miller Band. Of course southern blues and folk music: Robert Johnson, Josh White, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, etc…

とても違っていますね。僕に取っては古いジョニー・キャッシュやハンク・ウイリアムスが故郷を思わせるんです。あとはアメリカン・クラシック・ロックです。ボストン、トム・ペティやスティーヴ・ミラー・バンド。もちろんサザンブルースとかフォークですよね、ロバート・ジョンソン、ジョシュ・ホワイト、ニール・ヤング、ボブ・ディランなどなど

Please tell us what you expect and what we can expect from your performance at the Expo?

最後に京都音楽博覧会2009に出演する意気込み・見所を教えてください。

I will be performing on the acoustic guitar and piano. A good friend of mine – Rich Hinman – will be playing a traditional blues/country instrument called a Dobro. It is an acoustic guitar that sits on your lap and is played with a slide. Very cool!

僕はアコースティック・ギターとピアノで演奏するつもりです。僕の良い友人であるリッチ・ヒンマンと一緒に。トラディショナル・ブルースやカントリーで使われるドブロという楽器を演奏するんです。座って弾くアコースティックギターで、スライド・バーで弾くんです。とてもクールですよ。
